A nickname for a redhead. Also a blue cattle dog.

An Australian redneck. An uncultured, unrefined person, often pictured in a flanno and thongs. Often used affectionately.

"Full bogan, that one."

Dag

An uncool or goofy person, said fondly.

"He's such a dag."

Eshay

A young tough from the suburbs, known for Nike TNs, bum bags and petty crime. Also a greeting eshays use with each other.

"Some eshay tried to nick my bike."

Hoon

A reckless, showy driver, or any loudmouth lout.

"Some hoon in a Commodore."

Hugs and kisses

The missus. Your wife or partner.

"Better not, the hugs and kisses will be waiting up."

Larrikin

A mischievous, irreverent person who likes a joke and bends the rules. Usually a compliment.

"Robbo. Bloody larrikin."

Mate

Friend. Also used for strangers, and with the right tone for someone you are about to have a go at.

"Thanks, mate."

Mob

In Aboriginal English, your family, community and people. "Who's your mob?" asks where someone is from and who they are connected to.

"Who's your mob?"

Ocker

A loud, uncultivated Australian who plays up being Australian. Also describes the broad accent.

"Full ocker."

Old mate

A man whose name you don't know, or are choosing not to use.

"Old mate in the white Hilux."

Pom

An English person.

"Don't. The Poms."

Ranga

A redhead.

"The ranga in the corner."

Ratbag

A troublemaker or rascal. Often affectionate.

"One of those ratbag kids."

Rellies

Relatives.

"Rellies from Perth are staying."

Seppo

American. Short for "septic tank" because they're full of shit.

"Seppo tourist."

Sheila

A woman.

"Who's the sheila with Gaz?"

Stickybeak

A nosy person. As a verb, to have a nosy look.

"Mrs Henderson having a stickybeak."

Tall poppy

Someone successful who stands out. "Tall poppy syndrome" is the habit of cutting them down.

"Tall poppy syndrome."

True blue

Loyal and thoroughly Australian.

"Course. He's true blue."

Westie

Someone from the western suburbs of Sydney, or of another city. Usually a put-down.

"Penrith. Proud westie."

Yobbo

An uncouth, loutish person.

"Bunch of yobbos."
